The coach who has turned out the likes of Carnell Williams, Ronnie Brown, Rudi Johnson and Kenny Irons isn't going anywhere.

Auburn running backs coach Eddie Gran said Tuesday he's no longer a candidate to be South Alabama's first head coach.

Gran said he was informed by South Alabama officials that he is not among the finalists. He interviewed with South Alabama officials earlier this month. South Alabama may hire a head coach as early as next week, though it won't play its first game until 2010.

Gran, who is in Florida recruiting, said he was glad he was considered, but is delighted to be returning to Auburn.

"With the players we have, I think we're going to see something exciting the next three years. I'm happy I'll be a part of it,'' he said.

Gran will be entering his 10th season as Auburn's running backs coach.
