Tuberville continues interview process for defensive coordinator
|
Wednesday came and went without any movement on Auburn’s defensive coordinator search.
It has now been six days since former coordinator Will Muschamp left AU for the same position at Texas. The search has been quiet — head coach Tommy Tuberville is keeping his preferred candidates under wraps.
But an announcement could come soon, perhaps as early as today.
This weekend is one of the biggest recruiting weekends of the year for Auburn, which welcomes a total of 13 prospects to campus starting Friday.
Four of those players are already committed to Auburn. But four of the remaining nine are defensive prospects.
Tuberville would prefer to have a coordinator in place to speak to those recruits and others, as
Auburn’s recruiting efforts kick into high gear. National Signing Day, Feb. 6, is less than a month away.
Tuberville spent four days at the American Football Coaches Association convention in Anaheim, Calif., speaking to several potential candidates.
Georgia Tech coordinator John Tenuta, widely rumored to be a top candidate, is still without a job. Former SMU head coach Phil Bennett and former Miami Dolphins coordinator Dom
Capers are among several other available coaches with defensive backgrounds.
Meanwhile, the spins of the coaching carousel continue to be felt at Auburn.
Running backs coach Eddie Gran spent Wednesday in Mobile, where he interviewed for the head-coaching job at South Alabama.
The Jaguars don’t currently have a football program, but athletic department officials have said they intend to start one in 2009. The school plans to compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision by 2013, according to published reports.
Gran previously interviewed for the head job at Middle Tennessee State following the 2005 season.
He has coached tailbacks at Auburn for the last nine seasons, producing such stars as Rudi Johnson, Carnell Williams, Ronnie Brown and Kenny Irons. He also coached NFL star Deuce McAllister as a Tuberville assistant at Ole Miss.
Former AU offensive coordinator Al Borges is up for the coordinator’s job at Ole Miss under new Rebels head coach Houston Nutt, according to the Northwest Mississippi Daily Journal.
The newspaper said other candidates for the Ole Miss job include former Miami head coach Larry Coker; former Ole Miss quarterback Kent Austin, now the head coach of the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders; former Alabama coordinator Dave Rader and former Ole Miss receivers coach Hugh Freeze.
